Theory Test With Special Needs

October 6, 2007 2 comments

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) provides a number of facilities for those people with special requirements, these include foreign language voiceovers, extra time, British Sign Language interpretation and translator assisted tests.

How do candidates with special requirements take the theory test?

The following facilities are available for candidates with special requirements. All of the facilities need to be requested at the time of booking.

Facilities for those whose first language is not English

If your first language is not English, or you can not read or understand written English well, you can request a voiceover in one of 21 languages. A voiceover allows you to hear the theory test instructions and questions through headphones. The questions will automatically be read out to you, you can hear the answer options by touching the text on the screen. You can hear the questions as many times as you like, you simply need to touch the text of the question onscreen again.

Foreign language voiceovers are available in the following languages:

Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Dari, English, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, Kurdish, Mirpuri, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Pushto, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Welsh

Translator assisted tests

If there is no voiceover provided in the language you require, you can request to have a translator assisted theory test. The call centre agent should be able to tell you the names and contact details of the relevant DSA approved translators. It is your responsibility to arrange a test date with the translator and to pay any fees involved.

Facilities for those with reading difficulties

If you have dyslexia or other reading difficulties you can ask for an English or Welsh voiceover. You can also request to have up to double time for the multiple choice part of the theory test. If you require more than the standard time of 40 minutes for the multiple choice part you will need to send in evidence of your reading difficulty to the theory test booking customer services.

Facilities for those with hearing difficulties

If you are deaf or have hearing difficulties you can ask to take the theory test in British sign language (BSL). The BSL interpretation will run alongside the standard test questions and answers. If you do not use BSL, an interpreter can be taken into the test centre, this facility needs to be arranged through the theory test customer services section. There is no extra fee for either facility.

Other special requirements

If you have a special need that is not met by the facilities above, you can contact the theory test customer services section who can discuss your requirements
and the facilities available.

Tips on Preparing Driving Theory Test

September 11, 2007 Leave a comment

DSA introduced the driving theory test in 1996. According to this test, new learners and drivers have to pass the theory test before they book their practical test. The test focuses on all aspects of driving theory such as attitude, safety, handling, rules of the road, traffic and road signs etc. It helps the new driver to acquire the in depth knowledge of driving test.
You can only book your practical test after the successful completion of theory test.
The test is delivered using a touch screen computer for the multiple choice part and clicking on a mouse for the hazard perception part of the test.
You have to show your theory test pass certificate, photo id and your license to book the practical test.
Practical test is different for different type of vehicles like cars, motorcycles, large goods vehicles and passenger carrying vehicles. During practical test, learner must show the examiner how they can drive, face manoeuvres and their knowledge of highway-code. The candidate will be given every opportunity to show his driving skills.

Theory Test Booking Procedures:

You will need to book the theory and practical tests separately through the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) on:

    Telephone: 0870 010 1372
    Fax: 0870 010 2372
    Welsh speakers line: 0870 010 0372
    Minicom line: 0870 010 7372
    Website: www.dsa.gov.uk

The Test consists of two parts:
Multiple choice questions: – need to choose the correct answer from one/two or more options. Also there may be several correct options (pictures, graphics, road signs) which the candidate has to choose from the given set of answers.

New Driving Theory Test:
The new theory test contain 50 questions, you will need to have at least 43 questions correct in 57minutes for passing. As in the old theory test, the new test is also taken using a touch screen computer for the multiple choice part and clicking on a mouse for the hazard perception part of the test.
No need to be a computer expert.
Each candidate will have up to 15 minutes to get used to the system before starting his or her test. For any help or assistance you can contact the personal at the test center.
As is the old test, the screen is user friendly. Candidates can easily navigate through all questions. They can see the previous question, alter the answer etc.

At the end of the test, result is given to the candidate by calculating the screen of each candidate. Unlike before, there is no extra fee for immediate result.

We recommend you purchase from us the driving theory test software, which contains all the questions (in the question bank) and answers, which are in the same format as in the actual test, books or a hazard awareness video.

If candidates failed to pass first time there will be no limit on the number of times the theory test can be taken and there is no minimum time period imposed between attempts at the test, other than booking dates being full.
But with theory-test.co.uk, there is no way to fail the test , You have to sincerely study and solve the questions from our question bank.
The new theory test cost is 28.50

Important books for reference :
Highway code, BSM, AA, DSA, Know your signs

Hazard awareness consists topics such as:
Defining hazards, responding to hazards, reducing risks, Mirror, Signal, manoeuvre (Position, Speed/Gear, Look) routine etc.

Wish you all the very best for your exams.

DSA Exam Preparation

Look out for these hazards.

And it’s not how much you study but how you study.
This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on the computer screen of approximately one minute each. You are required to watch these clips as if you were the driver.

There will be 15 hazards to find – at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazards. The hazard clips will not contain any sound.

The clips feature various types of hazards like –

» pedestrians or cyclists crossing the road
» vehicles emerging from side roads, parking places or driveways
» large vehicles moving over to your side of the road
» meeting oncoming vehicles on narrow roads or where other obstructions or slow moving vehicles make the road narrow
» loose pets and farmyard animals
» changes in the traffic movement and volume
» junctions and roundabouts
» horse riders
» weather conditions of the day
» road surfaces
» parked vehicles
» hidden junctions & turns
So all the best for your preparation.

Practical Exam – Show me tell me question
Q: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
A: No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
